KISS frontman Gene Simmons, now 76, recently shared memories of his stark childhood in Israel, where he lived with his family in a cramped, one-room stone house. In a candid reflection, the rock legend described a life of extreme poverty, where basic necessities were scarce and toys were a luxury his parents simply could not afford.
Simmons recalled that his only plaything as a young boy was a stick he found outside. He spoke about the humility of those early years, noting that the experience shaped his relentless drive and work ethic later in life. The house, he said, had no modern comforts, and the family struggled to get by. Despite the hardships, Simmons emphasized that the lack of material wealth did not diminish the love in his household.
The musician, who would go on to become one of rock's most iconic figures with his signature long tongue and stage makeup, said those early struggles gave him a deep appreciation for everything he later achieved. He noted that having nothing taught him to value everything, from a simple meal to the success he would eventually build with KISS. The story serves as a reminder of how far he has come from a childhood defined by scarcity.
