UNCP Celebrates Key Milestone in Clinical Sciences Building Construction

Today, November 5, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke celebrated a significant achievement in the construction of its new $96 million Clinical Sciences Building. The final structural beam was lifted into place during a topping-out ceremony, symbolizing a hopeful future for healthcare in the region. Chancellor Robin Cummings expressed the importance of this moment, stating that the beam represents hope for increased access to healthcare and a stronger community.

The new facility, spanning 74,000 square feet, will house North Carolina's first public College of Optometric Medicine, along with advanced clinical training labs and patient care areas. It will also support the university's Occupational Therapy program and other clinical sciences initiatives, reinforcing UNCP's commitment to healthcare education and workforce development in southeastern North Carolina.

Chancellor Cummings highlighted the university's "grow your own" philosophy, noting that around 80 percent of UNCP's nursing graduates remain in the region, addressing local healthcare needs. Metcon Construction and TA Loving are collaborating to ensure the building reflects the unique culture of Pembroke. Metcon's founder, Aaron Thomas, shared his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the importance of creating local opportunities for success. As speakers signed the final beam, the event marked a significant step toward enhancing healthcare education and services in the area.
