Every summer, millions of Americans fire up their grills for burgers, hot dogs, and steaks. But behind the smoke and sizzle lies a costly risk that many homeowners overlook. Grill-related fires cause tens of millions of dollars in property damage each year, and the problem is more common than you might think.
According to fire safety data, the peak months for grill fires are July, June, and August. Most incidents involve gas grills, with leaks or blockages in the fuel line being a primary cause. A simple buildup of grease can ignite into a fast-moving fire that spreads to the house deck, siding, or eaves. Even a small flame can cause thousands of dollars in damage before it is put out.
The danger is not limited to gas models. Charcoal grills also pose a threat when hot coals are disposed of improperly or when the grill is placed too close to wooden structures. Many people do not realize that coals can stay hot for hours after cooking ends.
To protect your home, keep your grill at least ten feet away from any structure, including railings and overhanging branches. Clean the grease tray regularly and check the gas hose for cracks. Never leave a lit grill unattended. By understanding what causes these fires, you can enjoy your cookouts with greater peace of mind during the warmer months ahead.
