Old Parkland’s big expansion gets city approval

The Dallas City Council has given the green light to a significant expansion of the historic Old Parkland development, a project long sought by the Crow family's real estate firm, Crow Holdings. The approval, granted during a recent council meeting, clears the way for new construction on the sprawling campus near the American Airlines Center, a move that has been in the works for several years.

Under the approved plan, the developer will add several new buildings, including additional office space and a parking structure, to the existing complex. The design is intended to match the campus's signature neoclassical style, which features red brick, limestone accents, and copper roofs. City staff had recommended approval, noting that the project aligns with the area's zoning and includes improvements to surrounding streets and sidewalks.

Supporters of the expansion argue it will bring high-quality jobs and economic activity to the area, while also preserving the architectural character that has made Old Parkland a landmark. Some nearby residents, however, had raised concerns about increased traffic and the scale of the new structures. In response, the developer agreed to make certain adjustments, including a revised traffic plan and additional landscaping buffers.

The vote was not unanimous, with a couple of council members expressing reservations about the project's density. Still, the majority sided with the developer, citing the project's long-term benefits for the city's tax base. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with a projected completion date in 2027. Crow Holdings has not yet released specific details on tenants for the new space.
