Just weeks after taking office, Mayor Katie Wilson is making good on a central campaign promise. On Monday, she announced the creation of a citywide task force aimed at breaking through the regulatory and logistical bottlenecks that have slowed housing development across Seattle. The group, composed of builders, urban planners, tenant advocates, and city council members, will spend the next six months studying ways to shorten permitting times, reduce fees, and streamline zoning rules.
Wilson framed the effort as a direct response to the city's persistent affordability crisis. "We have talked about this problem for years," she said at a press conference. "Now we need to act. The goal is not just to build more units, but to build them faster and at a cost that working families can actually afford."
The task force will focus on several key areas, including expedited review for projects with a certain percentage of below-market-rate units, and potential changes to single-family zoning in transit-rich neighborhoods. Critics have already warned that fast-tracking approvals could lead to poorly planned developments, but Wilson insists that community input will remain central to any changes.
A preliminary report is expected by late fall, with legislative proposals to follow. Housing advocates have cautiously welcomed the move, noting that previous mayoral efforts stalled due to political infighting. Wilson, however, appears determined to avoid that fate. "We cannot afford another year of studies with no results," she said. "The time for action is now."
