Jessica Collins and Joseph O'Connor, the leaders behind HOK's Dallas office, recently sat down to discuss the evolving landscape of architecture and design. With decades of combined experience, the pair shared insights on how the firm is adapting to a changing world, from workplace shifts to sustainability demands.
Collins, who serves as the office's managing director, emphasized that the pandemic permanently altered how people view space. "We are seeing a move away from rigid floor plans," she said. "Clients now want flexibility, but they also crave connection. The challenge is balancing efficiency with human experience." O'Connor, the design director, added that material choices are also shifting. "There is a stronger focus on biophilic design and natural textures. People are tired of cold, sterile environments. They want warmth and authenticity."
Both leaders noted that lessons from recent projects have reshaped their approach. O'Connor pointed to a major corporate headquarters HOK completed in the region. "We learned that you cannot just design for the average workday anymore. You have to account for collaboration, focus time, and even social gathering. It is a layered puzzle." Collins agreed, adding that client expectations have risen. "They are more educated about design than ever before. They come to us with research and specific goals. It pushes us to be more creative."
When asked about the future, Collins highlighted the growing importance of resilience in design. "Climate concerns are no longer optional. Every project must consider long-term impact, from energy use to material sourcing." O'Connor concluded that the best designs come from listening. "Trends come and go, but solving real problems for people is what lasts."
