A prominent online financial influencer has been handed a significant prison term for orchestrating a massive real estate investment fraud. Tyler Bossetti, 31, was sentenced to six years in federal court on Friday for running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors of approximately $20 million.
Operating under the guise of a real estate expert, Bossetti used his social media platforms to cultivate a large following, branding himself as a successful property investor. He leveraged this online influence to solicit funds from individuals, promising high returns from short-term property flips and rental income. Prosecutors detailed that instead of investing the capital as promised, Bossetti used new investor money to pay fictitious returns to earlier investors, a classic hallmark of a Ponzi scheme.
The court heard that his scheme ultimately collapsed, leaving numerous investors with substantial losses. In addition to the prison sentence, the judge ordered Bossetti to forfeit assets and pay restitution, acknowledging the profound financial harm inflicted on the victims. The case has been highlighted by authorities as a stark warning about the risks of investment advice sourced from unverified online personalities, emphasizing the importance of thorough due diligence regardless of an individual's social media popularity.
