Peter Schiff called the 2008 housing market crash — now he warns a 'housing emergency' is coming. Are you ready?

Economist and longtime market contrarian Peter Schiff is once again sounding the alarm. The man who famously called the 2008 housing market collapse now warns that the current real estate landscape is heading toward a crisis of its own. In a series of recent statements, Schiff argued that the combination of stubbornly high home prices and elevated mortgage rates is creating an unsustainable bubble that must eventually burst.

Unlike the 2008 meltdown, which was driven by subprime lending and loose credit, Schiff says today's problem is a mismatch between what buyers can afford and what sellers are asking. Despite the Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hikes, home prices have remained stubbornly high. Schiff believes this is a temporary illusion. He predicts that prices will eventually fall to align with today's higher borrowing costs, a painful adjustment that he warns could trigger what he calls "a housing emergency."

According to Schiff, the longer the market resists this correction, the more severe the eventual downturn will be. He points to declining sales volume and growing inventory as early signs that demand is weakening. For homeowners who bought at peak prices with variable-rate loans, the risk of being trapped in an underwater mortgage is rising. Schiff's message is blunt: the party is over, and the hangover is just beginning. Whether his prediction proves accurate remains to be seen, but for those watching the housing market closely, his warning adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile landscape.
