Federal, state and city funding will support accessibility upgrades, energy-efficient systems, flood mitigation and community improvements at Boston's public housing development.
BOSTON - Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Mayor Michelle Wu, state officials and local housing leaders gathered to announce more than $16 million in funding for the modernization of the Fairmount Apartments in Hyde Park. The investment combines resources from multiple levels of government to address long-standing infrastructure needs at the public housing development.
The renovation plan covers a wide range of improvements. Accessibility upgrades will make the buildings easier to navigate for residents with mobility challenges. Energy-efficient systems will replace aging equipment, lowering utility costs and reducing the complex's environmental footprint. Flood mitigation measures will help protect the property from water damage, a growing concern in many parts of the city. Community spaces will also receive updates to better serve residents.
Officials described the funding as part of a broader push to preserve affordable housing in Boston and ensure that public housing residents live in safe, dignified conditions. The Fairmount Apartments have served Hyde Park families for decades, and the modernization effort aims to extend the building's useful life well into the future.
Residents are expected to see construction activity begin in the coming months, with work phased to minimize disruption. Local leaders praised the collaboration between federal, state and municipal partners, calling it a model for how public investment can directly improve the lives of working families.
