The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to residents about a growing number of real estate and rental scams targeting the area. Officials say these schemes often involve fake property listings, fraudulent rental agreements, and impersonators posing as landlords or property managers.
According to the sheriff's office, scammers typically advertise homes or apartments at below-market rates on popular online platforms. They pressure victims to pay deposits or first month's rent quickly, often through wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Once the payment is made, the scammer disappears, and the victim discovers the property was never actually for rent or does not exist.
The JCSO advises residents to be cautious when dealing with unfamiliar landlords. They recommend verifying property ownership through county tax records, visiting the property in person, and never sending money without a signed lease and in-person meeting. Red flags include requests for payment before a viewing, pressure to act fast, and landlords who refuse to provide identification.
Authorities also warn against wiring money or using payment apps that offer little to no fraud protection. The sheriff's office encourages anyone who suspects they have been targeted to report the incident to local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
