The extra-legroom economy cabin has become the most profitable square footage on a US narrowbody, according to a new analysis of seat economics. What was once a modest upsell has turned into a major revenue engine for domestic carriers.
The numbers tell the story. A standard economy seat on a narrowbody typically generates a few hundred dollars per flight, while an extra-legroom seat in the same row can bring in two to three times that amount once the fare premium and ancillary fees are counted. Because the seat itself occupies only a few additional inches of floor space, the marginal cost of offering it is minimal. The result is a margin that outstrips both standard coach and, on many routes, domestic first class.
Airlines have noticed. Carriers have been steadily reconfiguring cabins to add more of these seats, trading dense rows of standard coach for fewer rows with extra pitch. On some aircraft, the extra-legroom section now accounts for a meaningful share of total premium revenue despite taking up a small fraction of the cabin.
The strategy carries risks. Squeezing standard coach too tightly can push travelers toward competitors, and the premium cabin only works if enough passengers are willing to pay. For now, demand remains strong, and the extra-legroom seat looks less like a perk and more like the most valuable real estate on the plane.
