Gloucester Township Housing Plan Faces Pushback as Hearing Pushed Back

A large housing proposal in Gloucester Township is running into resistance from local residents as officials delay a key public hearing on the project.

The plan, called Freeway Pointe, calls for 743 housing units on a 154-acre parcel along Sicklerville Road. The development would rank among the biggest residential projects the township has seen in years, and it has drawn a steady stream of criticism from neighbors who say the area cannot handle that kind of growth.

Opponents have raised concerns about traffic congestion on Sicklerville Road, which already carries heavy volume during peak hours. They also point to pressure on local schools, emergency services, and stormwater systems. Some residents argue the site should remain undeveloped or be used for a less intensive purpose.

The hearing was postponed, giving both sides more time to prepare. Supporters of the project say the region needs more housing options, and they argue the development could bring tax revenue and new residents to local businesses.

Township officials have not announced a new date for the hearing. Until then, the proposal remains under review, and the debate over how much development the area can absorb is far from settled.
