Chicopee to consider quarterly real estate tax billing

Chicopee to consider quarterly real estate tax billing

CHICOPEE - Mayor John Vieau has taken a step toward potentially changing how residents pay their property taxes. He recently appointed a task force to review the city's current real estate tax billing process and consider shifting to a quarterly system.

Right now, Chicopee sends out tax bills twice a year. That means homeowners and businesses have to come up with large lump sums every six months. A quarterly system would split those payments into four smaller installments, which could ease the financial burden on many residents.

The task force includes city officials, financial experts, and community members. Their job is to study the logistics of such a change. They will look at how other Massachusetts cities handle quarterly billing, what it would cost to implement, and how it might affect the city's cash flow. The city relies on timely tax payments to fund schools, public safety, and other services.

Vieau said the idea is not new, but recent economic pressures have made it worth a serious look. Many residents have struggled with rising costs for groceries, fuel, and housing. Spreading out tax payments could help them budget more easily.

The task force is expected to report its findings within a few months. If they recommend the change, the City Council would need to vote on it. No timeline has been set for a final decision.
